Auditory Sensitivity in Autism - Assessment and Treatment

This is a very sensible document. It cites literature, considers potential positive reinforcement (versus the assumed sole negative reinforcement) of behaviors that escape or avoid certain sounds, and proposes treatment (versus accommodation only). It is worth reading: Managing Sound Sensitivity in Individuals With ASDs @asha.org

However, the final recommendation that " audiologists and SLPs are the appropriate professionals to assist individuals with ASDs and their families as they grapple with sound sensitivity" is concerning if we consider that systematic desensitization, proposed in the document as a strategy to improve sensitivity, to be done ethically and safely, requires very specific training that psychologists such as behavior analysts (BACB) have. So I would add that a collaborative effort is recommended.
