Behavioral Intervention to Increase Compliance with Liquid Medications

These are the fading steps reported in the recent study using applied behavior analysis to improve medication acceptance by a 3-year-old boy.

1. Increase the amount of time the empty syringe was visible.
2. Increase the amount of time Lukas was required to open his mouth.
3. Decrease the distance between Lukas and the syringe.
4. Increase the amount of water Lukas was required to take from the syringe.
5. Increase the ratio between placebo medication and water in the syringe.
6. Introduce dosages of real liquid medication.
7. Introduce Lukas’ mother as the medication provider while reducing the presence of clinicians.

The article, published in JABA, is summarized here.

This is just one boy, one behavior, but the Journal found that the material was novel and significant enough for publication.
